Fiesta!

Weekends in Limuru, Kenya are pretty laid back and restful. For the most part. It's kind of like living in Alaska - you have to be creative with your entertainment. So we created our own Mexican Fiesta on Saturday night. Our good friends, Clayton and Clara, came over. We looked up recipes on-line and made our menu. (We recommend Homesick Texan for great Mexican cuisine at home.) Then we headed to Nakumat (the Kenyan version of Super Walmart, but much less "super") and bought our fixin's. Back at the Limuru ranch, Clara made bean dip, and Will and I made tortillas from scratch. During the process, Will's comment was, "Now I know why people buy these. They take too long to make." I agreed, but you can't buy tortillas in Kenya, so we ended up with our homemade stack, which looked pretty good, in my opinion.

While my Mexican rice was boiling, Clara made enchiladas with our homemade tortillas.

When we sat down and looked at our hard work, we realized that it was a LOT of food for four people. So our Mexican party continued into Sunday lunch. Fiesta!

Good and Bad

Last weekend was gorgeous, so I ventured out each morning for a walk around my neighborhood. There are some NICE houses in my new neck of the woods - old British colonial houses. Although they're hidden behind gates and barbed wire, I still got a peak. The thing I love best about the neighborhood is the tea fields. We're surrounded by tea fields. And in the early morning hours, with the sun shining, you can smell the tea in the air.
On a completely different topic... Lately I've gotten really annoyed by all the rat and gecko poop on my classroom shelves and counters. Every day I come into my classroom to scrape little brown droplets off papers and books. Sometimes the kids get worksheets with little brown smears on them. The good thing for me is that this is Kenya, so no kids nor their parents care. Yea Kenya!

Married Life

After three weeks of marriage, I've finally moved all my stuff into the house. We've stuffed it in closets, and I gave away three bags of clothes to fit everything. But it's done. Now we're into our routine...

Wake up at 6:45 and get ready for school, trying not to wake Will up too much.

Kiss my sleeping husband good-bye.

Catch a ride to school with a co-worker.

Text Will that we made it to school safe and sound - no potholes swallowed us or matatus hit us.

I teach kids. Will runs all over Nairobi and Limuru keeping programs running and taking care of people.

I come home to a great "family" dinner cooked by Doris, our amazing house keeper.

Will comes home and gives me a kiss.

We eat and spend a restful evening at home.

We fall asleep to the thundering rain.
